Research performance and innovation are key characteristics of the six universities that comprise a national alliance with the title Innovative Research Universities Australia (IRU Australia). The member Universities - Flinders, Griffith, James Cook, La Trobe, Murdoch and Newcastle - are drawn from five states and were all founded during the period of higher education expansion in the 1960s/1970s. All six were established as research-based universities with comprehensive disciplinary coverage and a strong commitment to innovation and an inter-disciplinary focus.
